I've heard good things about credit unions. But don't you have to work somewhere first? Is there a secret handshake or something?

Yes there are many great things about credit unions, and to answer your questions, No. Most everyone has access to a credit union. The Ohio and U.S. governments understand how credit unions provide value and competition for financial services, so they have made credit union services more widely available.
