I've heard good things about credit unions. But don't you have to work somewhere first? Is there a secret handshake or something? 

Yes there are many great things about credit unions, and to answer your questions, No. Most everyone has access to a credit union. The Ohio and U.S. governments understand how credit unions provide value and competition for financial services, so they have made credit union services more widely available. This credit union, Wayne County Community Federal Credit Union, can serve and welcome anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Wayne County, in northeast central Ohio. A regular Account Membership is free, and we requires only a $25 initial deposit (it stays your money in your account)  to open your savings and checking account.  

The Piggy Bank Club Account (16 and under)

Piggy Bank Accounts are free and can be opened with a minimum of $10. Each time the child makes a deposit on the account they get to pick from an assortment of prizes. The Piggy Bank Club has special privileges such as birthday gifts, special events and other fun designed to encourage kids to get into the habit of saving, and keep saving for their lifetime.

NCUA Warns of Text Phishing Scam
​​ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Aug. 23, 2016) – The National Credit Union Administration has received
consumer calls about a suspicious text message​ claiming to come from the agency. 
The message reads: “National Credit Union Administration Alert for (recipient's phone number).
Contact 844-234-5445.”     However, T
his is not a communication from NCUA.
The agency does not seek personal information through the internet or on the telephone. 
Please contact NCUA's Consumer Assistance Center at 1-800-755-1030 between 8 a.m. and
5 p.m. Eastern if you receive one of these messages. NCUA also recommends contacting
your credit union and local law enforcement. 
You may also contact the
Internet Crime Complaint Center, a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation
and the National White Collar Crime Center. 
NCUA operates an
Fraud Prevention Center that offers information about avoiding frauds and scams
on its​ website.
If you suspect you may have become a victim of identity theft as a result of this scam,
you should immediately contact the three major credit bureaus and request a
fraud alert be placed on your credit report: Equifax (888-766-0008​),
Experian (888-397-3742), and TransUnion (855-681-3196).

The IRS Doesn't Want Your i-Tunes Cards

The Federal Trade Commission has issued another alert to consumers about fraud
attempts on consumers nationwide where i-Tunes cards are requested for payment
