What Happened
At approximately noon Tuesday, 9/15, WCCFCU experienced a system wide banking system outage after a significant equipment failure at our banking system provider’s main data center. This is a large system outage affecting many other credit unions that use the same banking system, not just WCCFCU.
Please be assured that this outage is not due to a data breach. Your banking information has not been compromised. This outage is due to an equipment cooling failure that brought down essential equipment that got too hot. A comprehensive report of the incident has been promised to us including why the redundant cooling system did not activate.
What is Being Done
Our banking system provider is continuing to work around the clock to restore services. Recovery efforts continue to be underway but, at this time, we do not have a confirmed timeframe for when our systems will be back up.
Our banking system provider has communicated that they are in the process of validating and rebooting systems. They have not yet communicated with us how long this process will take.
9/16 11:50am Update - Our banking system provider has communicated they have approximately 1/3 of credit unions affected restored; we are not one of them unfortunately. Online and Mobile Banking will remain unavailable until core processing has been restored for all credit unions. No confirmed timeframe has been made available yet; restorations are expected to continue throughout the day and into the evening.
9/16 3:20pm Update - Restoration efforts are continuing, but no material progress on bringing up additional credit unions has been made. The time has been spent standing up additional equipment and preparing remaining credit union environments for restoration. Still no confirmed timeline.
9/17 8:30am Update - No additional information. Our Banking System provider is bringing up credit union systems one-by-one. We are just waiting for the call to say we are next.
9/17 12:00pm Update - No additional information. Our Banking System provider is bringing up credit union systems one-by-one. We are just waiting for the call to say we are next.
9/17 1:50pm Update - Credit Union Management sat in on a webinar with our banking system provider CEO. While they wouldn’t commit to a timeframe, they plan to have all credit unions back up and running within the next 24 hours. Online and Mobile banking will be the last services brought up, so those services will most likely not be available until later Friday 9/18; assuming they can stick to their intended restoration schedule.
9/17 4:30pm Update - No additional information. Our Banking System provider is bringing up credit union systems one-by-one. We are just waiting for the call to say we are next.
How this Affects You
As the WCCFCU team works with our banking system provider to restore services as quickly as possible, please review how this affects your services right now:
Digital Banking - Our mobile app and access to online banking portals are temporarily not available
Debit Cards - Debit cards are functioning in offline mode. This means that, while they work, our debit card processor only has access to your last known balance (prior to the outage) to work with for approvals.
Credit Cards - Credit Cards are not dependent on our banking system provider and should be functioning normally.
ATM Withdrawals - Just like debit card transactions, ATM withdrawals will work, but the ATM network only has access to your last known balance prior to the outage. Balance inquiries are not functional, and withdrawal receipts will not show a remaining balance.
Branch Locations - Both our Smithville and Orrville branches remain open. Our tellers are utilizing offline processing to assist members with basic cash deposits and withdrawals, however without access to our banking system transaction amounts (particularly withdrawals) are limited.
Direct Deposit and other Electronic Transactions - All electronic transactions (including payroll direct deposits) are being held and will post automatically once system connectivity is restored.
Shared Branching - The Shared Branching Network is not available at this time. Other credit unions rely on connectivity to our banking system to access account details to perform their transactions. Without this connectivity, other credit unions will not be able to help you with transactions on a WCCFCU account.
